The Chairman of the Council of Elders for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, has raised concerns about the party's current situation ahead of the upcoming presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, 4 November 2023.

During a meeting of the Council of Elders in Accra, Mr Owusu-Agyemang openly expressed his worries that personal interests might be overshadowing the party's shared objectives.

The NPP is preparing to select its flagbearer for the 2024 elections, with four prominent members competing for this position. The race has generated considerable enthusiasm within the party.

Mr Owusu-Agyemang noted: "We've allowed our selfish interests to overshadow our common goal of party unity."

He stressed the importance of focusing on the fundamental principles and values that have guided the NPP over the years, rather than personal ambitions.

While acknowledging that the race for the flagbearer position has led to passionate debates and disagreements within the party and among supporters of the presidential candidates, Mr Owusu-Agyemang called on all presidential aspirants to avoid division and strive for unity after Saturday's presidential primary.

The frontrunner in the upcoming presidential primary is Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, with Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, as his main rival.

Former Minister for Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former Mampong MP, Francis Addai-Nimoh, are also vying for the flagbearer position.
