Attacks on firefighters: GNFS threatens to withdraw from hostile areas

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced it will withdraw its services from areas where firefighters face hostility and violence.
During an engagement on Saturday, 14 September 2024, the GNFS condemned the unacceptable trend of attacks on firefighters, who are often met with disrespect despite risking their lives to protect property and save lives.
The GNFS warned that assaulting firefighters is illegal and those involved will face severe legal consequences. The Service has pledged to defend its personnel vigorously and ensure that attackers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The GNFS also highlighted that outdated and malfunctioning equipment are major obstacles affecting their performance and response times. They are currently in discussions with the government to address these issues and improve operational capabilities.
In the face of ongoing assaults, the GNFS has made it clear that it will not tolerate violence against its members and will take strong action against offenders.
The Service urged citizens to use proper channels for reporting concerns rather than resorting to violence.
