Minority to withdraw cooperation in Parliament over NDC instigated violence
The Minority in Parliament has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of instigating violence across the country, with the latest incident occurring at the Electoral Commission’s Greater Accra Regional Office on Friday, January 17, 2025, during the re-collation of the Ablekuma North parliamentary results.
According to the Minority caucus, led by Weija Gbawe MP Jerry Ahmed Shaib, key figures within the NDC, including Lieutenant Colonel (rtd) Larry Gbevlo Lartey, Kofi Totobi Quakye, and Malik Basintale, are behind the alleged disruptions.
The Minority claims that the NDC is deliberately obstructing the declaration of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Akua Afriyie, as the rightful winner of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.
They have, therefore, called on President John Dramani Mahama and the security agencies to take swift action to address the situation or face a lawful protest from the Minority.
The Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has warned that the Minority may withdraw its cooperation in parliamentary business if the Ablekuma North seat remains vacant.
He further urged NDC supporters and sympathizers to accept defeat and allow due process to take its course.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib also appealed to President Mahama and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to step in and restore calm, stressing that the electoral process must be respected to uphold democracy in the country.
