The Bono Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboah, has urged the Muslim community to take an active role in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as "galamsey," in the region.

Speaking during the Eid ul-Fitr celebration at the Sunyani Jubilee Park, Mr. Akwaboah cautioned that if galamsey activities continue, the Bono Region could soon face severe food and water shortages.

The event marked the end of Ramadan, a significant period for Muslims characterized by fasting, prayers, and communal gatherings.

Expressing deep concern over the environmental and social impacts of galamsey, the Minister called on the youth involved in illegal mining to desist from such activities.

He stressed that the government has implemented various strategies to curb the menace, warning that those caught engaging in illegal mining would face the full force of the law.

In addition to addressing illegal mining, Mr. Akwaboah also issued a stern warning to illegal timber loggers, emphasizing that anyone found operating unlawfully in the region’s forests would be prosecuted.

The Regional Minister highlighted that the government has rolled out several initiatives aimed at creating sustainable employment opportunities for the youth.

He stressed that these programmes are part of a broader effort to reduce unemployment and curb activities that harm the environment.

Reflecting on the achievements of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) since taking office, Mr. Akwaboah noted that the party has fulfilled several campaign promises within just three months.

These include the reduction of Hajj fares and the introduction of an additional holiday for Eid celebrations, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting the Muslim community.

The Eid celebration also featured prayers led by Alhaji Imam Baba Seidu, the Chief Imam of the Bono Region. He prayed for love, peace, and unity among Ghanaians, expressing his hopes for the country’s progress and prosperity. He also prayed for divine guidance for the government to lead with integrity and effectiveness.

The event attracted a large number of worshippers who gathered to mark the end of Ramadan with prayers and reflections on peace and community development.
