Comparing Nkrumah and Akufo-Addo is a needless distraction: Kweku Baako to Napo
The Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako, has expressed strong disapproval towards Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his recent political misstep.
NAPO sparked controversy by comparing the achievements of President Akufo-Addo to those of Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, during his unveiling as Dr Bawumia’s running mate in Kumasi on Tuesday.
Mr Baako described this comparison as a "needless distraction."
Critics argue that NAPO's comments could negatively impact the NPP's chances in the December general elections.
Mr Kweku Baako echoed these sentiments, stating that NAPO's remarks have provided their political opponents with ammunition.
"The comparison NAPO made between Akufo-Addo and Dr Nkrumah is completely irrelevant and needless," Mr Baako fumed, emphasizing that the NPP running mate should have focused on the primary subject matter.
"You don’t provide an armor for opponents or neutrals; you don’t do it. It's needless!" Mr. Baako charged.
While acknowledging that NAPO may be ideologically correct, Baako criticized him for using such a platform for ideological debates.
"There is nothing wrong if he thinks Akufo-Addo has done better than Nkrumah. We can't all think the same way, but on this occasion, he must focus on the election and paint a positive picture for his ticket," Mr. Baako added in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM.
The veteran journalist also revealed that some constituencies are agitated because of NAPO's comments, underscoring the potential impact of this political gaffe on the party's electoral prospects.
