NPP lost 2024 elections because of governance issues, not economic issues – Napo clarifies
Barely a month after the New Patriotic Party's debilitating defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia's running mate, has assigned reasons for the party's loss.
He identified internal challenges within the party as the main reason for its loss in the December 7, 2024, polls.
According to him, governance issues undermined the party's performance and not economic issues
Napo highlighted longstanding internal governance issues as a critical factor in the party’s poor electoral showing.
He explained that the defeat was not merely a reflection of economic difficulties but stemmed from unresolved internal conflicts and organisational lapses within the NPP.
“MPs were begging people to go and vote, but they refused.
That is not about economic mismanagement; it points to a deep-seated problem the party hasn’t addressed,” Napo stated.
He stressed that these challenges have plagued the NPP for years, citing historical lessons the party had learned from past defeats.
Reflecting on the party’s experiences, NAPO recalled the NPP’s decision to boycott Parliament in 1992 following the general election, which resulted in the party having no parliamentary representation.
“It was a party decision. Subsequently, the same party acknowledged that boycotting Parliament was a mistake.
They realized it would have been better to go with the few seats they won than to boycott entirely.
So, the party adapted, and the country learned from that,” he explained.
Napo further emphasized the need for introspection within the NPP to address these persistent issues, warning against overconfidence and complacency.
“You can’t imagine yourself to be a master of everything at all times.
There are events that may overwhelm you, and it is critical to learn and adapt,” he remarked.
He assigned these reasons while speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Monday January 6, 2025.
