Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria has been officially unveileed as the new Ashanti Regional Chief Imam in a ceremony presided over by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, in Kumasi.

The inauguration follows the passing of the former Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, on December 17, 2024, after serving the Muslim community in the region for 13 years.

Sheikh Haroun, who was 74, passed away following a brief illness at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

The event, held in tandem with the final funeral rites of Sheikh Haroun, was attended by dignitaries from various sectors, including politicians, religious leaders, and traditional chiefs.

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria’s appointment marks a significant leadership transition for Muslims in the Asante Kingdom.

As the new Regional Chief Imam, he is entrusted with leading prayers, offering spiritual guidance, and fostering unity among the diverse Muslim population in the Ashanti Region.

In his role, Sheikh Zakaria is expected to bridge tribal, sectarian, and political divides to build a cohesive and harmonious community.

The Muslim community also anticipates his leadership will be marked by integrity, impartiality, and fairness, setting a benchmark for future leaders.

Sheikh Abass Karaara was introduced as the Deputy Regional Chief Imam, tasked with supporting Sheikh Zakaria in fulfilling his duties.

As part of the ceremony, Sheikh Zakaria was presented with a certificate of recognition by the National Chief Imam, symbolizing the formal endorsement of his appointment.

The occasion was graced by several high-profile figures, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other government officials, highlighting the significance of the event.
