Dec. 7 polls: Why does EC continue to court mistrust? – GCPP quizzes
The General Secretary of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Mr Citizen Ato Dadzie, has raised concerns over the Electoral Commission's (EC) handling of the electoral process, accusing the body of fostering mistrust in the lead-up to the December 7 elections.
Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ghana Yensom Morning Show, hosted byKayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku on Thursday, November 7, 2024, Mr. Dadzie criticized the EC for what he described as a reactive rather than proactive approach to election management.
Mr. Dadzie argued that instead of leading and guiding political parties through the electoral process, the EC has been lagging behind, often reacting to issues raised rather than anticipating and addressing them in advance. "The EC over the past few months seems to be courting mistrust for itself, which is a concern as we approach such a critical election," he remarked.
His comments came in response to the EC's recent release of the certified voters register to political parties without essential statistical breakdowns.
He questioned the lack of transparency in providing the document without details, such as regional and constituency breakdowns, which would allow stakeholders to verify the accuracy and completeness of the data.
"How can stakeholders assess what has or hasn’t been done without a detailed breakdown?
Actions like these do not build trust or ensure transparency," Mr. Dadzie emphasized, warning that the high levels of mistrust could negatively impact the credibility of the elections.
The GCPP General Secretary urged the EC to adopt a more transparent and accountable approach, emphasizing the importance of trust in the electoral process for a smooth and credible election in December.
