Mathew Opoku Prempeh promises local manufacturing of dialysis consumables
The Vice Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed plans to establish local industries for the production of dialysis consumables and reagents.
This initiative, aimed at reducing the cost of kidney disease treatment in Ghana, is part of the NPP’s broader strategy to enhance healthcare delivery.
Speaking during a visit to the Renal Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Prempeh stated that the government is already engaging companies that manufacture dialysis-related products to explore potential partnerships.
“The establishment of these industries will not only make dialysis treatment more affordable but will also create jobs and position Ghana as a hub for the production of medical consumables,” Dr. Prempeh noted.
Dr. Prempeh highlighted the NPP government’s track record in healthcare, citing the ongoing construction of 111 hospitals under the Agenda 111 initiative as evidence of their dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure nationwide.
“Our government remains committed to ensuring quality healthcare for all Ghanaians.
The move to manufacture dialysis consumables locally is another step toward achieving this goal,” he said.
The NPP plans to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to establish world-class facilities for manufacturing dialysis consumables.
This strategy is expected to boost the local economy while addressing the high cost of renal treatments.
This announcement follows the government’s rollout of free dialysis treatment for renal patients, which commenced on December 1, 2024.
