Three killed, five injured in Police shooting at Newmont Ahafo South mines
Three individuals have been shot dead, and five others injured, following a police operation at the Newmont Ahafo South mines near Acherensua in the Ahafo Region.
The victims were reportedly part of a group of eight who had allegedly entered the mining concession for illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.
The incident occurred around 7:00 PM on Wednesday when the group attempted to flee after spotting police officers.
According to eyewitness accounts, the police pursued them and allegedly fired indiscriminately, leading to fatalities and injuries.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the St. Elizabeth Hospital mortuary, while the injured are receiving medical care at the same facility.
In the aftermath, the youth of Acherensua have staged protests, blocking major roads and demanding justice for the victims.
Protesters claim the police used excessive force and are calling for an investigation into the incident.
Tensions remain high in the area as community members await a response from authorities.
Efforts to reach the Ahafo Regional Police Command for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, local leaders are urging calm as they engage with the authorities to address the situation.
