Missing ECG containers: NPP MP calls for thorough investigation

George Kwame Aboagye, Member of Parliament for the Asene-Akroso- Manso Constituency in the Eastern Region and Ranking Member on Energy, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the disappearance of over 1,000 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the Tema Port.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr Aboagye emphasized that the incident must not be overlooked and urged the House to establish a bi-partisan committee to investigate the matter thoroughly.
His comments sparked concerns among fellow members of Parliament, who expressed support for the call to probe the issue.
In an exclusive interview with Class News, Mr Aboagye expressed worry that the missing containers incident could damage Ghana’s reputation, particularly with neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, which rely on Ghana for trade.
The Asene-Akrosomanso MP acknowledged the arrests of a Ghanaian national and several foreigners in connection with the missing containers but stressed the need for a deeper investigation to identify the masterminds behind the theft.
He pointed out that the Ghanaian arrested likely did not act alone and might have had accomplices.
Despite reassurances from the Minister that the perpetrators would be found, Aboagye set a deadline of one to two weeks for tangible action to be taken.
He warned that if no progress is made, he will raise the issue again in Parliament.
The MP also expressed shock at the failure of security at the port, noting that the port’s security cameras and other security measures had not detected the missing containers.
Mr Aboagye called on the authorities to avoid any partisan politics in their investigation, stressing the importance of a transparent and thorough probe to ensure justice is served.
