A tense standoff erupted at GICEL Estate as members of the Council of Indigenous Business Associations (CIBA) in the Greater Accra Region(GAR) clashed with over 50 police officers, some of whom were reportedly masked and armed.

The altercation stemmed from what CIBA members described as an unannounced and unjustified police operation to lock up shops and evict business owners.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the officers stormed the estate without prior notice or legal documentation, sparking outrage among shop owners.

The affected business operators alleged that the operation was illegal and have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and hold the officers accountable.

In an interview with Class FM's Samuel Addo, some aggrieved CIBA members narrated their ordeal.

"The police came early in the morning and started locking up our shops without any court warrant or prior notice.

When we questioned their actions, some of us were physically assaulted," one business owner claimed.

They further appealed to the government for protection against what they described as unlawful actions by security personnel.

Attempts to get a response from the Weija District Police Command have so far been unsuccessful.

However, residents and business owners at GICEL Estate are demanding justice and assurances that such incidents will not happen again.

The situation remains volatile, with Class News reporter Samuel Addo closely monitoring developments and awaiting an official response from the police.
