Charllote Osei's petition was written at Jubilee House- Adorye reveals
The Head of Operations for the Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye, has alleged that the petition to remove former Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, was orchestrated at the Jubilee House and not initiated by any individual.
On Accra-based CTV’s OMAN GHANA NKUSUO morning show, hosted by Yaa Titi Okrah, Adorye made this revelation while discussing the recent petition submitted on Monday, January 27, 2025, seeking the removal of EC Chair, Jean Mensa and her two deputies.
The petition, filed by Ofosu-Appiah Daniel, accuses the EC leadership of constitutional violations, incompetence, bias, and actions that have eroded public confidence in the Commission.
The petitioner is also calling for the removal of:
Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Commission’s boardThe petition, which invokes Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, cites gross misconduct, human rights violations, and incompetence as grounds for their dismissal.
Adorye, however, claimed that the trend of politicizing the EC began under the New Patriotic Party's administration when the party allegedly engineered the removal of Charlotte Osei.
He argued that Charlotte Osei should have remained in office until retirement, just as Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan did, instead of being dismissed before the end of her tenure.
“The President should appoint a neutral person, such as a lecturer with no political ties, who can serve until retirement, as Dr. Afari-Gyan did,” Adorye suggested.
“All these issues with the EC started under the NPP.
No one petitioned for the removal of Afari-Gyan until his retirement.
But after the NDC appointed Charlotte Osei, the NPP allegedly prepared a petition at the Jubilee House to remove her.”
He further called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that the next EC Chairperson is a neutral, non-partisan figure who can serve a full tenure, preventing the frequent changes in EC leadership whenever a new party assumes power.
Adorye also cited incidents at Ablekuma North as evidence of alleged bias in the EC’s leadership, claiming that Jean Mensa’s affiliation with the NPP influenced the declaration of results at the district collation centre, instead of following the accepted electoral procedures.
