Why Democracy Hub's 'presenting and sponsoring' Council of State candidates, despite favouring its abolition
Although advocacy group Democracy Hub favours the abolition of the Council of State, it has announced it is, in the interim, and as a matter of being practical, "presenting and sponsoring candidates for the upcoming Council of State elections".
"As many of you know, Democracy Hub has consistently championed bold reforms to reshape our governance structures. Critical in our proposals for constitutional remarking is the abolition of the Council of State - a body we believe has become ineffective in fulfilling its advisory role to the Presidency and the broader machinery of governance," a Democracy Hub statement dated Thursday, January 23, 2025, said.
"However, we recognise that real, lasting change must be achieved strategically, working within the confines of the existing system. While we stand firm in our call for the Council's abolition, we also understand that its current role in the constitutional amendment process cannot be overlooked," the group explained.
"By law, all bills seeking to amend the Constitution must first be referred to the Council of State for consideration. This means the composition of the Council is pivotal in determining whether constitutional reforms succeed or falter."
Democracy Hub emphasised, "To ensure the Council does not obstruct progress, Democracy Hub is participating in the upcoming elections by supporting candidates who share our vision for transformative governance."
