GFA considers appointing technical director to support Black Stars coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly considering appointing a technical director to support Black Stars head coach Otto Addo as part of efforts to revamp the team following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Black Stars, four-time African champions, missed out on the continent’s premier tournament for the first time in two decades after finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points.

Ghana’s AFCON campaign included three draws and three defeats across six games, marking one of the team’s most disappointing performances in recent history.

The GFA has faced significant criticism and pressure to reassess its coaching structure.

Otto Addo, who signed a three-year contract in March 2024 with an option for a two-year extension, has come under scrutiny, with many calling for his dismissal.

In response, the GFA held extensive discussions with Addo and his technical team and announced plans for further consultations with stakeholders to decide his future.

Recent media reports suggest the GFA is exploring the idea of appointing a technical director to work alongside Addo.

This move, if implemented, would allow Addo to remain as head coach but with significant adjustments to the team’s backroom staff as preparations begin for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Adding to the challenges, Otto Addo is owed four months of unpaid wages.

Henry Asante Twum, Communications Director of the GFA, confirmed the arrears during an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports.

“It is true we owe Otto Addo. As of the last update from the Sports Ministry, there are salary arrears, which unfortunately is not a new issue,” Twum said.

“We have held several meetings with the Ministry about the payments.

Otto Addo understands the challenges, and we are working to resolve the issue.”

Following their AFCON disappointment, the Black Stars are now focused on delivering a stronger performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Ghana’s campaign begins with matches against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

The possible appointment of a technical director is seen as a strategic step to strengthen the coaching setup and restore confidence in the team as they aim for redemption on the global stage.
