BOA sponsors West Africa swimming and open water championship
Ghana was the host nation for the 7th Zone 2 West Africa Swimming and Open Water Championship held at The Trust Emporium at Bukom in Accra.
The competition was held on Thursday, 5 March 2020 to Sunday, 8 March 2020.
The competition attracted the crème de la crème of swimmers from 22 West and Central African countries and provided a platform for Ghana to showcase its young and budding swimming stars including Abeiku Jackson, Kaya Forson, Maayaa Ayawere, Niklas Yeboah, Kow Jackson and many more.
In attendance were high ranking dignitaries from the African governing body of swimming (CANA), Executive of the Ghana Swimming Authorities(GSA); the Director-General of the National Sports Authority(NSA); the Minister of Youth and Sport; the Mayor of Accra and officials of Bank of Africa (BOA).
In an interview, officials from BOA explained that the bank’s love for and commitment to sports are what motivated them to partner with the GSA to organise the competition.
They noted that they were of the firm belief that such a platform will create an opportunity for young talents who, but for this tournament or other similar tournaments, would not have had the opportunity to showcase their potential to the world.
The organisers of the competition commended BOA for their support and appealed to Corporate Ghana to support the lesser-known sports.
At the end of the competition, Senegal came tops with 21 Gold, 16 Silver and 12 Bronze medals. Nigeria was second with 9 Gold, 13 Silver and 9 Bronze medals. Ghana was third with 4 Gold, 8 Silver and 16 Bronze medals.
