Barimah Abamfo, a key figure in the Ken For President 2024 campaign, has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to seriously consider Mr Ken Ohene Agyapong as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections.
In an interview on the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Otafrgya Kaayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku on Accra 100.5 FM, Mr Abamfo emphasized that the party's grassroots are strongly in favour of Agyapong’s candidacy as running mate.
He argued that acknowledging this sentiment is crucial to energizing the party's base, which has been demoralized since Agyapong's loss in the presidential primary.
Mr Abamfo highlighted a report from February that identified Mr Agyapong as a leading candidate for the Vice-Presidential slot, and he urged party leaders to acknowledge this reality.
According to Mr Abamfo, internal party research supports Mr Agyapong as the preferred choice among those vying for the position.
“The NPP cannot break the eight-year political cycle without Mr Ken Agyapong as running mate,” Mr Abamfo stated, stressing the necessity of compensating Mr Agyapong’s supporters.
He revealed that Mr Agyapong commands a significant supporter base of approximately two million card-bearing NPP members.
Mr Abamfo underscored Mr Agyapong's potential to tackle youth unemployment, proposing the construction of sixteen factories across all regional capitals with a budget of just one billion dollars.
This initiative, he argued, would create ample job opportunities for the nation's unemployed youth.
Furthermore, Mr Abamfo disclosed that the likes of the Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin played a pivotal role in persuading Mr Agyapong to support Dr. Bawumia's campaign after he was edged out of the presidential race.
In conclusion, Mr Abamfo made a compelling case for the selection of Mr Ken Agyapong as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, asserting that this move is essential for the NPP's success in the forthcoming elections
