Probe assault on student at Mahama lecture - NPP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding a prompt investigation into the alleged assault on Nana Boakye, a TESCON member and student at Christian Service University, reportedly by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The incident occurred during a public lecture by former President John Mahama at the university.
Mr. Boakye allegedly faced the wrath of NDC members after he remarked: "Mahama will lose," during Mr. Mahama's speech.
NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, condemned the assault and called on the Inspector General of Police and the Ashanti Regional Police Command to quickly apprehend those responsible.
Speaking at a news conference in Kumasi, Ahiagbah emphasised the need for justice.
"He had done nothing wrong, but the NDC took advantage of him in an auditorium where we have police people. They slapped him and later beat him mercilessly outside the auditorium," Mr. Ahiagbah said.
Mr. Ahiagbah underscored the party's commitment to ensuring justice.
"Our determined position is that the police will investigate this issue and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. This morning he went to the police regional office to lodge an official complaint."
The delay in lodging the complaint was due to Mr. Boakye's physical and emotional distress following the attack.
Mr. Ahiagbah explained: "This should have been done much earlier, but he wasn’t well; he was completely devastated. Today he feels much better and has gone to lodge an official complaint of the matter. Now we are urging the police to investigate this expressly without delay to ensure that the perpetrators are punished according to law."
