Where are the 12,000km of road? I’ll audit them if elected – Mahama questions Akufo-Addo

The flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has questioned the Akufo-Addo-led administration's claim of constructing over 12,000 kilometres of roads across the country.

Mr. Mahama cite a lack of visible evidence to support the government's assertion.

Speaking at a campaign event in the Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom constituency, in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Mahama expressed scepticism and vowed to audit the road projects if the NDC wins the 2024 general elections.

He highlighted that his interactions with traditional leaders and citizens across the country have consistently revealed dissatisfaction with road infrastructure.

“Everywhere I go, every traditional ruler who has spoken has complained about the poor road network," Mr. Mahama noted.

He continued that: “The NPP says that in the eight years of [John Agyekum] Kufuor, he did 3,000 and something kilometres of roads. Under the NDC, they say we did 4,700 kilometres. And they alone claim to have done 12,000 kilometres of roads. The question I am asking is, where are those roads?”

Mr. Mahama speculated, in a sarcastic tone, that perhaps the only place where the roads could be found was President Akufo-Addo’s hometown, Kyebi.

“Well, I have not been to Abuakwa and Kyebi, where the president comes from. But I hear the roads there are very good, so maybe that is where the 12,000 kilometres of roads are,” he added.

Mr. Mahama pledged to audit the government's road projects if re-elected, stating that it would ensure transparency and accountability in how public funds have been spent.

"When we come, the new roads they said they have done, I will audit them to find out where the money that has been paid for 12,000 kilometres of roads has gone because we can’t find those roads,” he added.
