The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called on participants in Monday’s special voting exercise to consider Ghana’s current economic challenges when casting their ballots.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday after an open day with Muslim students in Cape Coast, Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang appealed to security personnel, media practitioners, and other eligible voters in the special exercise to reflect deeply on the prevailing hardships and make choices that could help improve the nation’s trajectory.

She emphasized the deteriorating state of press freedom under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, claiming that several journalists had been forced to flee the country due to fear of attacks in the line of duty. She urged media personnel participating in the special voting to consider the threats to their profession and vote massively for the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, whom she described as a leader capable of resetting the country.

“Under the Mahama administration, press freedom was highly respected, but the same cannot be said for the current government. Media practitioners must reflect on these realities as they head to the polls,” she remarked.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also called for transparency and fairness in the electoral process, urging the Electoral Commission to ensure credible and peaceful elections.

She appealed for balanced and impartial coverage from the media while encouraging security agencies to maintain professionalism throughout the process.

“We don’t expect the elections to make headlines for the wrong reasons. We urge everyone, including the media, to provide fair coverage, and we call on the security services to uphold the fairness we all expect,” she said.

The NDC vice presidential candidate expressed optimism about the party’s chances, stating that a Mahama-led administration would address the nation’s pressing issues and restore hope for all Ghanaians.
