Guage sentiments of officers in the appointment of new IGP -Senior officers to Mahama
Some senior officers of the Ghana Police Service have called on President John Dramani Mahama to carefully assess the sentiments within the service before appointing a new Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In an interview with Classfmonline.com on strict conditions of anonymity, the officers emphasized the need for the President to take into account the morale and concerns of police personnel in selecting the next IGP to effectively implement his agenda for crime fighting and law enforcement.
According to them, while the public may perceive the current IGP, Dr. George Akufo Dampare, as an effective leader, many officers within the service are dissatisfied with his leadership style.
The senior officers expressed strong reservations about Dampare’s potential reappointment, stating that his tenure has led to divisions within the service.
They claimed that promotions under his leadership have not been based on merit but have instead been used as a tool to suppress dissenting views.
They urged President Mahama to engage with officers at various levels to assess the overall mood within the police service, arguing that such consultations would be crucial in ensuring that the next IGP can unite the force and effectively lead efforts to maintain law and order.
