Ayawaso West Wuogon by -election mayhem five years ago

Exactly five years ago today, the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region witnessed a disturbing incident during a by-election to replace the then-deceased Member of Parliament, Kyerematen Agyarko.

Heavily armed men from the national security of Ghana, deemed state-sanctioned terrorists, invaded the by-election, leading to indiscriminate firing and life-changing injuries for many.

The NDC has recalled the incident in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey in Accra.

''In the aftermath, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) withdrew from the by-election, contributing to the event recording the lowest voter turnout in the history of the 4th Republic,'' the statement posited.

The Akufo-Addo government responded by establishing a high-powered Commission of Enquiry to investigate the circumstances and provide recommendations, the statement added.

''Regrettably, despite the findings and recommendations of the Emile Short Commission of Enquiry, the current government has failed to implement them.

This negligence has left victims, seriously injured and economically challenged, to fend for themselves in an economy described as destroyed beyond recognition due to the alleged ineptitude of the Akufo-Addo government," the NDC said.

With the upcoming general elections signalling the last year of the Akufo-Addo government, the NDC calls for immediate action to implement the Commission's recommendations, the statement stressed.

The party pointed to the Ayawaso West Wuogon disturbances as a critical learning point, emphasizing that the government's alleged actions led to the loss of lives to secure victory in the 2020 general elections.

In the statement, the NDC urged the government to bring swift and lasting relief to the victims of the Ayawaso West Wuogon incident.

The party called on all voters in Ghana to stand ready to vote out the Akufo-Addo government, accusing it of staining the country's democracy with the blood of innocent Ghanaians.

The NDC asserted that Ghana deserves to develop in peace and unity, emphasising the need for a change in leadership for the well-being of the nation.
