Atik Mohammed warns against privatization of ECG
Policy Analyst Atik Mohammed has strongly cautioned the government against any attempts to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), warning that such a move will be fiercely resisted.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Atik declared, “Any attempt to privatize ECG will be resisted. Let it sink. If alternative (private) distributors are what you want to introduce, go for it but not at the expense of ECG.”
His comments come amid ongoing debates on proposals to privatize ECG as a strategy to improve efficiency in electricity distribution.
While proponents believe private sector involvement could help address operational inefficiencies, critics—including Atik—argue that ceding control of ECG would be detrimental to national interests.
Atik’s stance echoes concerns raised by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which has also voiced opposition to the privatization agenda.
Many stakeholders fear that selling ECG could result in:
Higher electricity tariffs for consumers Job losses for ECG employees Reduced public influence over decisions in the energy sector
