Awutu Bereku shooting: Suspect not Hawa Koomson’s body guard – Awutu Senya East NPP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency has refuted allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding a recent shooting incident at Awutu Bereku during the swearing-in of new chiefs.
The NPP described the claims made by the NDC at a press conference as "bogus" and accused them of trying to tarnish the reputation of their Member of Parliament (MP), Mavis Hawa Koomson.
The incident, resulted in one person, Frank Odoom, a native of Effutu and registered voter in Winneba, being injured.
The NDC, during a press conference at Kasoa, alleged that the suspect in police custody was the personal bodyguard of the MP for Awutu Senya East.
However, a statement issued by the Awutu Senya East NPP, signed by Constituency Secretary Michael Addy, set the record straight stating: "The shooting incident did not happen at Kasoa, as claimed by the NDC, but at Awutu Bereku during the swearing-in of new chiefs a day after the Awutu Awubia Festival."
The NPP also clarified that the suspect, Nai Akwasi Lartey, is the boundary chief of Awutu Ofaakor and not a personal bodyguard of the MP.
"The personal bodyguard of Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson is a female police officer, so what is the NDC talking about?" the statement read.
The NPP noted that the victim, is neither a member of the NPP nor the NDC and does not reside in Kasoa.
"The victim is a resident of Winneba in the Effutu Municipality," the statement revealed.
The NPP emphasised that the suspect had taken responsibility for the victim's medical care.
"Investigations conducted by the Awutu Senya East NPP revealed that it is the suspect who took the victim to the hospital after the unfortunate incident and has been taking care of him," the statement clarified.
The party accused the NDC of having no campaign message and attempting to divert attention from its lack of policy initiatives.
"The NDC has no campaign message for the good people of Kasoa because the commissioning of the new Central East Regional Police Command built by Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson has given them sleepless nights," the NPP asserted.
The NPP called on Ghanaians to disregard the allegations, labelling them as propaganda.
"We, in the NPP in the Awutu Senya East Constituency, are focused, and the hardworking Member of Parliament, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, will continue to work hard and develop Awutu Senya East Constituency," the statement added.
