A deadly clash between two rival groups of illegal timber loggers in Sefwi Agyemadiem, located in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region, has resulted in the deaths of five individuals, with several others sustaining severe injuries.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, was reportedly fueled by an ongoing dispute over control of prime logging areas. According to sources, both groups had been engaged in unauthorized timber harvesting, a growing concern in the region.

Eyewitnesses described a violent confrontation, with the rival factions wielding machetes, pump-action guns, and other tools used in their illicit activities.

The situation escalated quickly, leading to fatalities and destruction, including the burning of a Mitsubishi pickup truck with registration number GE 9075-17.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the deceased, who were all members of one of the factions.

Police personnel have since been deployed to the area to retrieve the bodies and restore calm.

Meanwhile, the injured have been transported to Sefwi Asawinso hospitals for medical treatment.

The clash has heightened concerns over illegal logging and its impact on the region’s forests.

Residents and local authorities are calling for stricter enforcement of forestry laws to curb the growing lawlessness.

A few weeks prior to the incident, Nana Ofori Ahenkan II, the Chief of Sefwi Boinzan and Kontihene of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, had urged the government to take decisive action against illegal activities within forest reserves, warning of the rising tensions among those engaged in unlawful logging.

The authorities are expected to intensify investigations into the latest clash as part of efforts to restore order and protect the region’s natural resources
