Parliament reconvenes today amid tensions over vacant seats
Parliament will reconvene to tackle unresolved issues that have disrupted legislative proceedings, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s directive for a 10:00 AM sitting at the Accra International Conference Centre's Grand Arena.
The House will reconvene today, Thursday, 11 November 2024.
This session is seen as a decisive step in breaking a parliamentary impasse that has stalled national policymaking.
The deadlock traces back to Speaker Bagbin’s recent decision to declare the seats of Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West vacant, which ignited strong opposition from the Majority caucus.
Claiming that the move undermined their parliamentary representation, the Majority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, swiftly sought relief from the Supreme Court, challenging the Speaker's authority in this matter.
In response, the Supreme Court issued a temporary stay on the vacancy declaration, reinstating the contested seats and further fueling tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses.
Amid the standoff, the Minority caucus took a bold step by occupying the Majority's side of the chamber, forcing Speaker Bagbin to adjourn the House, marking a historic disruption in parliamentary protocol.
