Obuasi killings: Ghana's military image has dropped, needs redemption -Malik Adama

Malik Adama, National Communications team member of the governing National Democratic Congress and former Parliamentary Aspirants for Okaikwei North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region has stated that the reputation of the military has dropped drastically due to some actions undertaken by some military officers in the past and the recent occurrence in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region
He made this comment during a discussion segment on Accra-based CTVs OMAN GHANA NKUSUO with Yaa Titi Okrah on the current shooting incidents at Obuasi between the residents, Anglo Gold Ashanti (AGA) and some military men leading to the death of 8 people and some other individuals injured.
The incident occurred late on Saturday, January 18, 2025, around 11:00 pm, when a group of approximately 60 illegal miners scaled the security fence and attempted to access the Deep Decline area of the mine.
The illegal miners were reportedly armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other tools, and opened fire on the military personnel when confronted.
According to Malik Adama, the conduct of the military is largely based on the kind of personnel recruited into the service and some negligence on the part of the past government regarding some misconduct of the military in the country causing citizens to lose their lives.
“Even if the people are illegal miners the remedy is not to kill so at all standards the military was wrong” Three months of training for some military men is not enough to make a personnel professional to face pressure.
Therefore calling on the government to investigate and deal with the military men who were involved in the killing by the law.
He further added that the military's core mandate is to protect the civilians and not to kill, explaining that only investigation can confirm if the people were illegal miners so the military should avoid releasing false information.
