The Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST) has rolled out new measures aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of waste collection across the country.

This comes in response to growing concerns from the general public regarding the state of waste management in Ghana.

According to Sector Minister, Mutala Mohammed, the Ministry is working on a policy framework, legal instrument, and supporting laws to ensure the effective implementation of waste collection strategies.

While acknowledging the presence of existing policies, he stressed the need for further refinements to enhance service delivery.

Mr Mutala Mohammed clarified that the initiative is not targeted at specific waste collection entities but rather aims to create a level playing field for all waste management operators.

He assured that the ministry will support all waste collection companies to improve service delivery.

“We must expand the scope of waste management to include local authorities and SMEs.

This will not only improve efficiency but also create more jobs for Ghanaians,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of recycling, noting that revamping waste management will require innovative solutions to maximize the value of waste.

Mr. Mutala made these remarks during a tour of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), where he received briefings on their ongoing activities in waste management and environmental sustainability.

Additionally, he highlighted the need for rigorous inspections and due diligence, particularly concerning food and other imports entering the country.

He assured that he will engage the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), as well as the Ministers for Trade and Industry and Agriculture, to strengthen regulatory oversight in this area.
