Drones deployed in Bawku to tackle rising violence, track gunmen
Security forces in Bawku have introduced drone technology as part of efforts to combat the escalating violence in the region and track gunmen involved in the ongoing conflict.
The use of high-altitude drones has already led to the recovery of firearms and the arrest of several suspects.
The drones are deployed to monitor the movements of combatants and provide live intelligence to security personnel on the ground. Once suspects are identified through aerial surveillance, action is swiftly taken to apprehend them, a strategy that has seen success in recent operations.
This technological initiative follows a recent upsurge in violent incidents. On December 18, intense gunfire erupted around 6am in the Bawku-Gingande and Kpalore areas, adding to the already heightened tensions in the region.
Thankfully, no casualties have been reported from this latest clash, although the situation remains tense.
The violence in Bawku has already claimed many lives, with two additional fatalities reported on December 16.
Moro Aziz, a mentally ill man from Gozesi, was tragically killed near the Bawku cemetery after wandering into the area.
Kasim was also fatally shot in Daduri while attempting to relocate to a safer area. With these deaths, the total number of fatalities since the resurgence of violence in late October has reached 35.
The ongoing violence, characterised by sporadic attacks and retaliatory actions, has left the community on edge.
