Deputy IGP tightens noose around Captain Smart’s neck with defamation suit
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Christian Tettey Yohunu, has filed a defamation lawsuit against broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, widely known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited.
The suit was filed at the Accra High Court on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
The Deputy IGP's legal action stems from allegations made by Captain Smart during a broadcast on December 27, 2024.
According to court documents, Smart claimed on the programme that certain individuals within the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service were plotting to destabilize the country through a coup d’état.
The broadcaster also alleged that Mr. Yohunu’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically influenced, further asserting that he had attended meetings to lobby for the position.
Additionally, Captain Smart accused Mr. Yohunu of visiting the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials while allegedly holding New Patriotic Party (NPP) membership and offering payments to secure his appointment as Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In response, Mr. Yohunu is seeking general damages for defamation and an injunction to prevent Captain Smart and Media General from making further defamatory remarks.
He is also requesting a court order mandating the defendants to retract their statements and issue unqualified apologies.
The retractions and apologies are to be published on three separate occasions on Onua TV and aired three times on Onua FM, according to the Deputy IGP’s demands.
