Balance campaign duties with your legislative responsibilities – Bagbin urges MPs
The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to balance their campaign efforts with their legislative responsibilities.
1Speaking during the 5th meeting of the Fourth Session of Parliament on Tuesday, 15 October 2024, Speaker Bagbin emphasised the need for MPs to remain committed to their legislative duties despite the intense demands of the campaign season.
While acknowledging the challenges MPs face in securing or retaining their seats in the upcoming elections, Speaker Bagbin underscored the importance of not allowing electoral activities to overshadow critical national duties.
He reminded MPs that Parliament has a full legislative agenda that requires their attention in the weeks leading up to the elections.
“The legislative agenda ahead is weighty, and we must approach it with the seriousness it demands," Bagbin stressed.
He continued that: "The Environmental Protection Bill, Parliamentary Service Bill, and Parliamentary Transition Bill are among the key pieces of legislation that must be debated and passed as soon as possible."
He further cautioned MPs to ensure that their focus on campaign activities does not interfere with the pressing work required in Parliament.
“It is understandable that the demands of campaigning will pull your time and energy. However, it is critical that we balance these demands with our legislative responsibilities,” Speaker Bagbin added.
