The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has warned against the growing trend of unauthorised individuals wearing military-pattern uniforms during protests, public events, and illegal activities.

GAF emphasised that such actions pose significant security risks and tarnish the image of the military.

In a statement issued on Monday, 14 October 2024, GAF expressed alarm over the increasing misuse of military uniforms, particularly by those providing security for public figures and engaging in illegal mining (galamsey).

 Despite previous warnings, this unauthorised practice continues to rise.

“The attention of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been drawn to the unauthorised and unlawful use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements by protesters during demonstrations, as well as by individuals providing security for some public figures,” the statement said.

GAF highlighted the security risks associated with such actions, noting that political activists and illegal miners are also misusing military attire.

"GAF has also noted with dismay similar illegal acts among persons operating in illegal mining areas (galamsey sites) and some political activists. Despite ongoing education and warnings, this concerning trend appears to be increasing."

The military warned that those caught wearing unauthorised uniforms would face legal consequences.

 “In light of the security implications of these illegal acts, GAF will henceforth take decisive actions, including the arrest of persons who violate these regulations to face the full rigour of the law," GAF stated, urging the public to report any suspicious activities involving unauthorised military attire.

As the 2024 general elections approach, GAF reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring peace and security, calling on citizens to support efforts to maintain stability.

"GAF reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining the territorial integrity of Ghana. As the country approaches the 2024 general elections, the cooperation of all citizens is essential in upholding peace and security," the statement concluded.
