A Rocha Ghana has endorsed former President John Dramani Mahama’s proposal to ban mining in forest reserves if he is elected in the December 7 general elections.

The National Democratic Congress’ flagbearer assured at a media engagement in Accra on Sunday, July 7, 2024, that his administration would amend the law to prohibit mining in forest reserves across the country.

Daryl Bossu, the Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, a non-profit environmental conservation organization, praised Mahama’s pledge, calling it a step in the right direction.

"This is what we have been fighting for all these years as a conservation organization, but our efforts seemed to have fallen on deaf ears," Mr Bossu remarked.

He endorsed Mahama’s decision while speaking in an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s evening news on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Mr Bossu expressed hope that Mr Mahama would follow through on his promise if elected in the December 7 elections.

He acknowledged that politicians have often made promises in opposition but failed to deliver once in government.

Nonetheless, he emphasised that A Rocha Ghana would continue to monitor the situation and hold Mr Mahama accountable to ensure he fulfills his commitment to banning mining in the forest reserves if elected.
