Kofi Akpaloo, flagbearer of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has criticised the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for demanding a forensic audit of the 2024 voters register.
Mr. Akpaloo described the request by the NDC as a “non-starter” and a waste of time with elections fast approaching.
During an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, Mr. Akpaloo questioned the feasibility of the NDC’s demand, pointing out that there are less than three months until the December 7 polls.
According to him, the Electoral Commission (EC) simply does not have the time to conduct the thorough audit the NDC is calling for.
“We have almost 65 days until the elections, and the EC is expected to audit the register within the next 60 days. When are we going to do this forensic audit involving 275 constituencies, 40,000 polling stations, and 18 million voters?" Mr. Akpaloo asked.
He stated: “NDC, please stop this request because it will not help anybody.”
The NDC has raised concerns that the voters register has been inflated with ineligible individuals, pushing for an audit to remove any "ghost names."
However, Mr. Akpaloo dismissed these concerns, asserting that such issues would not affect the outcome of the elections.
“Mind you, this is a biometric register, and no dead person can come out of the grave to vote. If there is a dead person on the register, it will not affect the results, so this request is a non-starter. You’ve wasted everybody’s time,” he remarked.
Mr. Akpaloo further praised the Electoral Commission for its handling of the register, rejecting any notion of significant errors.
“The EC needs to be commended for the work it did. It shows that it is up to the task, and I’m not accepting any excuse about human error,” he added.
