Court restricts movement of former minister over murder case
A Sunyani District Court "B" in the Bono Region has placed travel restrictions on Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the former Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, in connection with an alleged murder case.
As part of his bail conditions, the former Sunyani West MP and owner of Nsoatreman Football Club (FC) cannot leave or travel outside the Sunyani Municipality without prior approval from the court.
Presiding over the case on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Judge Eric Daning imposed these restrictions when Baffour-Awuah, 58, and two other suspects—his bodyguard, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Joseph Kyeremeh—appeared before the court.
The trio is being prosecuted over the tragic killing of Francis Frimpong, an ardent supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC, during a violent clash on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
The incident occurred at the Nsoatre Prof Amoah Koromansah II Stadium when Nsoatreman FC hosted Asante Kotoko in a Ghana Premier League Matchday 19 fixture.
The court charged Baffour-Awuah and Kyeremeh with "abetment to commit a crime, to wit murder" under Sections 20(1) and 46 of the Criminal Offenses Act 1960 (Act 29).
They were each granted GH¢500,000 bail, with one surety to be justified.
However, the court ordered Baffour-Awuah to submit his passport to the court registry for 14 days.
Meanwhile, the court charged Owusu, the bodyguard, with murder and remanded him into police custody until Monday, February 17, 2025.
Inspector Alexander Oppong, the prosecutor, told the court that the suspects played a role in the murder of the deceased and requested that they be remanded in custody to assist ongoing investigations.
He revealed that a search conducted in Owusu’s residence led to the discovery of two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.
However, defense counsel Moses Obah pleaded for bail, arguing that his clients were prominent figures who would cooperate with police investigations.
The case has sparked significant public interest, with football fans and political observers keenly following developments.
