Potholes turning Accra-Tema motorway into a death trap
The state of the Accra-Tema motorway in the Greater Accra Region is nothing to write home about despite the numerous promises to transform the country’s only expressway into a six-lane road by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta.
The motorway in recent times has become a death trap posing all manner of dangers to motorists and commuters.
There have been several galleys and potholes on the country’s only speedway which was constructed by Dr Kwame Nkrumah and opened to traffic in 1965.
The speedway since its opening has not seen any major rehabilitation works except the bituminous patches.
The emergence of potholes on the speedway is everywhere thereby causing traffic jams and presenting hazards to users.
Some drivers who spoke in an interview with Classfmonline.com on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at the Tema-Roundabout end of the motorway complained about the levels of deterioration of the road.
They explained that the number of potholes on the road has turned the road into a death trap.
According to them, when driving on the road, one has to be extra careful because a car ahead will suddenly break in an attempt to avoid a pot-hole.
A commercial driver called Abdul Nyame said the pot-holes on the motorway have metamorphosed into man-holes.
“Every second one drives on the motorway, you will encounter a man-hole,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Deputy Communications Director of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Samuel Kofi Amoah, has called on the Roads and Highway Minister to as a matter of urgency, remove the unused toll booths on the Accra-Tema motorway to save lives.
According to him, this will create a safe environment for driving on the motorway.
The Deputy Director of Communication of the GPRTU made this call in an interview with Class 91.3 FM.
He argued that the toll booths have become a death-trap on the road.
He stressed that the toll booths have become a worrying cause of accidents on the highway.
He bemoaned the loss of lives on the motorway because of the unused tollbooths on it.
He further stressed the need for the building of streetlights on the motorway to ensure enhanced vision at night to prevent accidents.
