Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has issued a stern warning to scrap dealers at Agbogbloshie, a major e-waste disposal site in Accra, Ghana, advising them to stop the dangerous practice of burning e-waste.

This action, according to the minister, significantly contributes to air pollution and poses serious health risks to both the workers and surrounding communities.

The minister's call comes as part of a broader initiative to improve Ghana's environmental sustainability practices, with a particular focus on reducing pollution in urban areas.

Agbogbloshie, one of the largest e-waste hubs in the world, has long been plagued by environmental and health challenges due to improper disposal methods.

During a visit to the area, the minister further encouraged scrap dealers at Agbogbloshie to utilise the established e-waste collection centres, which are designed to handle and process e-waste in an environmentally friendly manner.

These centres provide a safer, more sustainable alternative for recycling and disposal, ensuring that harmful pollutants are properly managed, reducing the risk of environmental contamination.

“We must take responsibility for our environment. Burning e-waste is not only illegal but also dangerous for the future of our planet. I urge all scrap dealers to sell their materials to the e-waste collection centres, where professionals will handle the waste in a way that benefits both our economy and our health,” he said.
