Works will start on the construction of a metal footbridge for commuters and residents of Abeka-Lapaz in the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region in November.

The government plans to construct three footbridges on the George Walker Bush Highway to curb the increasing number of pedestrian knockdowns and deaths on the road.

About 60% of road crashes on major national highways in Accra, were recorded on the N1 highway.

This is according to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly Road Safety Report from 2011 to 2015.

The footbridges will be located at Lapaz Junction, Akweteyman Junction and Awoshie.

The Assemblyman for Wuoyeman Electoral area, Mr Patrick Awuku, announced the commencement of the project at a stakeholder meeting with the drivers' unions, traders, Urban Roads engineers and the contractors for the construction of a metal footbridge held at the Tema Station lorry terminal at Abeka–Lapaz on Friday, August 26, 2022.

According to the Assemblyman, the construction of the metal bridge to aid pedestrians crossing the George Walker Bush N1 Highway will commence in November 2022.

He said the project has been made feasible with the support of the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Mr. Patrick Boamah.

"We know the construction works will affect businesses and some households in the area but there is a need for people to bear with the construction works for the smooth completion of the project," he explained.

"I know the construction will create some inconvenience for the people and businesses in the area but all these for the good of the people," he added.

He reminded them that when there is a need for them to move their wares as well as vehicles for the smooth takeoff of the project, they should comply.

He called on the leaders of the various groups in the area to cooperate with the contractor to meet the deadline for the completion of the project.
