NPP leadership knows 'they’ve not treated me well' – Kwabena Kwabena

According to Kwabena Kwabena, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has not been fair to him.

He told Nana Romeo on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo that this was well-known by the leadership of the party.

“We know we did not treat you fairly,” he said executives of the party often tell him.

The Aso hitmaker said the betrayal explained his silence and withdrawal of support for the party that recently governed Ghana for eight years.

“Over the years, they’ve not treated me well,” he emphasised.

“It’s not something I want to go into details for. But the bottom line is they know very well they mistreated me.”

Kwabena Kwabena revealed he originally supported the party because of “candidate Akufo-Addo's ideas” and this was when he recorded and released a 2008 campaign song titled Vote Number 1.

He added though he was “proud” to do this, he was not “a card-bearing member of the NPP.

“I [only] loved his [Akufo-Addo] ideologies and his plans for Ghana.”

The multiple award-winning singer-songwriter expressed his displeasure with a recent controversy caused by portions of his 2008 song being used by the NPP for its 2024 election campaign, with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Nana Akufo-Addo’s Vice, leading the charge.

He said he did not authorise the use of his music, in part or whole, for the campaign.

“I did a song in 2008. Fast forward to 2024, you [NPP] picked the number one spot on the ballot and thought you needed to revisit that song and use it. You called, and initiated a conversation for mutual understanding towards an advertisement,” he narrated, adding no agreement was reached.

Kwabena Kwabena lamented NPP, however, went ahead to “edit out what they wanted from the old song and then put my voice and image out there without my consent, approval and substantive agreement”.

He said he trusted his management to handle the infringement appropriately.
