University of Ghana-Students Representative Council (UGSRC) presidential and vice presidential candidates (L-R): Maradona and Jay Lit, alias Maralit 2024

The Appeals Board of the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, Accra, has overturned the disqualification of Mr Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known in showbiz as Guru NKZ from the Students Representative Council (SRC) presidential race.

"On this side, we don't lose [peace/victory and love emojis]," Guru remarked on social media, Sunday, September 15, 2024.

After vetting on August 11, the UGSRC Vetting Committee noted Guru was ineligible to run for office because he was a nonresident student of UG, Legon. The Judiciary Board upheld the disqualification.

However, the Vice Dean has eventually directed the names of Maradona Adjei Yeboah (Guru) and his running mate Jeffery Adu-Yeboah (Jay Lit) should be included in the list of presidential and vice-presidential candidates, effectively returning them to the race.

On August 17, when a speaker for Guru and Jay Lit's campaign, Andy Asante Okyere Mensah, spoke exclusively to Prince Benjamin (PB) on Entertainment Capital on Accra 100.5 FM, he said Guru was being sabotaged by "the students, the student body, the SRC".

"Guru would have won the election by a landslide, hands down. This is what some people want to avoid. It's definitely [a sabotage]," Andy Asante Okyere Mensah said.

He added the protocol to address the controversy was to write to the election commission (EC) for an explanation for Guru's disqualification; petition the judiciary board of the UG-SRC; and write to the Dean of Students and other school leaders.

According to a statement signed by Guru and Jay-Lit, on August 19, they had “formally filled a petition against the SRC Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify” them.

The statement continued: “This petition has been lodged with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs” of UG, Legon.

“Additionally,” it went on, “our legal team has submitted an interim injunction to the Judicial Board, requesting a temporary halt to the electoral process until a proper hearing and ruling can be made”.

“We shall ensure that there is no discrimination towards any student, whether resident or non-resident, able or with special needs, first Degree or PFD, Local or International, Korle-Bu, City Campus or Distance education, including all the Regional Learning Centers across the length and breadth of the country.

“We have full confidence and trust in the integrity of the Judicial Board and believe that they will grant us a fair hearing, leading to a just outcome,” team Maradona and Jay Lit, alias Maralit 2024, said.

Thanking followers for their “unwavering support,” team Maralit assured: “Together, we shall manifest the interests of all students, building the SRC with everyone for everyone.”

On August 23, Guru informed his followers on Facebook the interim injunction his campaign sought for the UGSRC election had been granted.

A rap star, entrepreneur, music executive, and Level 300 student of UG, Guru NKZ dreams to use the UGSRC presidential powers to digitalise the UG student identification process, and reduce school and accommodation fees, among other things.
