M.anifest draws attention to US city names given to Ghanaian streets
Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has expressed confusion regarding the American city names given to streets in Madina, a suburb of Ghana’s capital Accra.
The rapper made this known via a video he put up on his Facebook timeline on Sunday, 2 October 2022.
Captioned “Which kind country be this, chale? I conf… Ghana turn Yankee,” the award-winning musician began the 20-second video with the words: “Chale, the street I grew up on in Madina is now renamed Tennessee Street.”
“The next street is also called Oklahoma Street,” he said.
“And the next street is also called Connecticut Street,” the rapper nickname M.dot added.
“This is Madina o, not America,” he noted.
“And the next street is Arkansas,” M.anifest went on before adding: “and for good measure, they even added Bavaria.”
At each point he mentioned the aforementioned street names, the rapper and social commentator provided evidence by showing himself standing in front of the street name plate on the wall of a Madina house bearing it in the selfie video.
The Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority, formerly the Department of Town and Country Planning, in collaboration with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and traditional authorities are responsible for Ghana's street naming and property addressing system.
