Management of TYakoradi Port briefing the Regional Minister at a meeting

The management of the Takoradi Port and Harbour Authority has praised the introduction of oil and gas exploration, describing it as a “blessing” that has significantly increased offshore vessel traffic and boosted revenue generation at the port.

To further optimize operations, the management is advocating for the relocation of oil and gas services from the Western Naval Command to the port.

They believe this strategic move would leverage the port’s prime location and infrastructure, positioning it as a more effective hub for handling oil and gas operations and solidifying its role in Ghana’s energy sector.

Commissioned in 1928, the Takoradi Port has played a crucial role in facilitating Ghana’s international trade. Its strategic location makes it an ideal trade route for Europe, America, and Asia.

Currently, the port handles approximately 65% of Ghana’s total exports, including major commodities such as cocoa, timber, bauxite, and manganese.

In recent years, the port has undergone major transformations, including a $250 million expansion project initiated in 2004.

Originally established as a bulk cargo port, it has now expanded to include two additional sections: a Container/Multipurpose section and an Oil and Gas section.

During a familiarization visit by Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, Deputy Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of Takoradi Port, Eliasu Danitie Umaru, emphasized that the introduction of oil and gas services has been a game-changer for the port.

He revealed that vessel traffic has surged, attracting more companies to the port enclave, which in turn generates increased revenue for the government.

Umaru also highlighted key challenges facing the port, particularly the Minerals Commission’s policy prohibiting the delivery of explosives after 6 pm.

He urged the commission to reconsider this regulation to enhance operational efficiency.

Additionally, he appealed to the Regional Minister to support the relocation of oil and gas services from the Western Naval Command to the port, stressing that the port is now well-equipped to handle these activities following its recent upgrades and expansions.

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson commended the management of Takoradi Port for their efforts in job creation and revenue generation.

He acknowledged the port’s vital role in expanding employment opportunities and enhancing activities along the value chain.

Minister Nelson assured the port of government support in addressing its operational challenges.

As part of his visit, the minister also toured Takoradi Flour Mills and GHACEM to gain firsthand knowledge of their operations and assess their contributions to the regional economy.
