Energy Minister alarmed by ECG's GHS 1.5 billion demurrage at Tema port
The Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has conducted an inspection tour of the Tema Harbour to assess the status of approximately 2,500 containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that have remained uncleared at the port.
The containers, which contain essential materials purchased under the previous administration have accumulated demurrage charges amounting to GHS 1.5 billion, raising concerns over resource mismanagement and poor coordination between agencies.
Mr Jinapor described the situation as unacceptable, emphasizing the urgent need to clear the containers to prevent further financial losses and ensure the timely execution of critical energy projects for the benefit of Ghanaians.
"This is a clear case of inefficiency that must be addressed immediately.
We cannot afford to waste public resources while crucial energy projects are delayed," he stated.
The Minister assured the public that immediate measures would be taken to resolve the issue and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to efficiency, transparency, and prudent resource management in advancing Ghana’s energy sector development goals.
