The Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to seek the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) approval to use the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Sports Stadium for the Black Stars' next home match in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

This comes on the back of CAF’s ban on the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, which hosted Ghana's last game against Angola, due to an "unsuitable playing field."

The ban leaves Ghana with limited options and raises the possibility of the Black Stars hosting their upcoming match against Sudan in October in neighboring countries like Togo, Nigeria, or Ivory Coast.

In light of the ban, the Sports Ministry has recommended the Accra and University of Ghana facilities, stating that “most issues have been resolved” and urging the GFA to contact CAF for an inspection and possible approval of the venues.

A statement issued by the Ministry on Thursday, 12 September 2024 said: “The Minister has further instructed the Ghana Football Association to immediately request CAF to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the newly-built University of Ghana stadium, for approval as Category 3 match venues, for use by the Black Stars in its next international match in October.”

The statement further elaborated: “Most issues identified by CAF at the Accra Sports Stadium during a previous inspection have been resolved, while the University of Ghana Stadium has already hosted CAF Category 2 matches. However, the stadium, since its inauguration, is yet to be inspected by CAF’s independent inspectors for consideration as a suitable Category 3 match venue, in accordance with CAF’s Stadium Regulations."

The University of Ghana Sports Stadium has recently hosted matches during the 13th African Games in March and the WAFU Zone B U-17 tournament in May. The Accra Sports Stadium is a key venue for several Ghana Premier League clubs and teams participating in CAF Inter-club competitions, such as FC Samartex and Nsoatreman FC.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has also "directed" the National Sports Authority (NSA), responsible for maintaining sports facilities, to "take steps to resolve issues with the pitch" at the Baba Yara Stadium. The poor condition of the stadium’s turf is attributed to a five-day religious program hosted in July, which significantly impacted the field.
