Player selection for national teams solely done by technical team – Kurt Okraku

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has rejected claims that members of the GFA influence player selections for the national teams.

This issue has become a heated topic of discussion among Ghanaians, many of whom attribute the struggles of the national teams to alleged interference from the GFA in coaching decisions.

During a session with Parliament's Sports Select Committee on Monday, 30 September 2024, Mr. Okraku emphasised the autonomy of the coaching staff.

He cited comments from Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, stating:  "Coach Addo has said on platforms that one of the key reasons he accepted to come back is the fact that he is allowed to do the work the way he wants to work."

Reinforcing his point, the GFA President clarified that the responsibility for player selection for both the Black Stars and the Black Queens lies entirely with their respective technical teams.

"Players representing Ghana are solely selected by the technical team of our national teams," he asserted.

Mr. Okraku appeared before Parliament in response to a petition from the Save Ghana Football Forum, submitted earlier in February, which aimed to address various challenges within Ghanaian football.

He was joined by GFA Vice President Mark Addo and General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo as they discussed ongoing issues impacting the sport.
