GPL wrap: Hearts of Oak stuns Accra Lions as Samartex held at home by Nations FC
Matchday 15 of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League(GPL) delivered thrilling action at various venues, with one fixture remaining to be played on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Heart of Lions extended their unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory over Young Apostles at the Kpando Sports Stadium.
A decisive 87th-minute strike from Kwesi Pong secured the Lions three valuable points.
Legon Cities, rooted at the bottom of the table, suffered another setback on Friday, losing 1-0 to Aduana Stars at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
Abdel Bamba’s 44th-minute goal gave Aduana Stars their first win under new coach Cioba Aristica.
The match between Basake Holy Stars and Bechem United at the Ampian AAK II Sports Arena was abandoned after Bechem United failed to show up.
The team cited a bus breakdown en route to Ainyinase and requested a reschedule, but Holy Stars declined due to the late notice.
Bechem United now faces potential GFA sanctions, including a forfeiture of the match, a three-point deduction, and a fine of at least 10,000 Ghana cedis.
At the Baba Yara Stadium, Asante Kotoko maintained their strong form with a 2-0 win over Bibiani GoldStars.
Justice Blay converted a first-half penalty, while Kwame Opoku added a second late in the game.
Sunday’s matches featured a mix of drama and tight contests.
At the Aliu Mahama Stadium, Karela United and Vision FC played to a 1-1 draw.
Joshua Kwame Rhule gave Vision FC a first-half lead, but Jibril Nurudeen equalized for Karela in the 80th minute.
At the WAFA Park in Sogakope, Hearts of Oak edged Accra Lions in a 3-2 thriller.
Mohammed Hussein gave Hearts the lead, but Accra Lions responded with goals from Lucky Nwafor and Ezekiel Alladoh. However, two quick strikes from Mawuli Wayo in the 81st and 84th minutes secured victory for the Phobians.
At the Golden City Park, Berekum Chelsea and Dreams FC played out a goalless draw.
Meanwhile, at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, defending champions FC Samartex were held to a 1-1 draw by Nations FC. Solomon Adjei scored for Samartex in the 33rd minute, but Emmanuel Annor equalized for Nations FC just before halftime.
The final Matchday 15 fixture is set for Wednesday, January 1, with Nsoatreman FC hosting Medeama SC at the Nana Kronmansah Park.
