Capital City Africa Cup 2024: Ghana lifts cup, beating DC United in America
Ghana has won the Capital City Africa Cup again.
Ghana beat the Major League Soccer-decorated DC United U-18 in a Saturday, October 12, 2024, match at the 20,000-seat Audi Field, Washington DC.
Via Medeama SC, Ghana lifted the cup last year, making the 2024 victory consecutive.
For yesterday’s match, Ghana’s team, officially called the Ghana Week DC Select Side, included seven players from Asante Kotoko, two players from Attram De Visser FC, and other top Ghanaian players based in America.
The original team was supposed to be fully Asante Kotoko players from Ghana but that proved impossible due to visa challenges, after the first batch of players left for the US.
Even though DC United, playing at home, opened the scoring early in the first half, Ghana Week DC Select Side equalised via Elvis Kyei Baffour of Kotoko.
When Geoffrey Owusu found the net again for Ghana, this time in the second half, victory was sealed – 2:1.
Capital City Africa Cup game anchors the DC Ghana Week, hosted by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), LIQUID SOUL-DC, Events DC, and D.C. United, is a celebration of Ghanaian art, culture, business, tourism, sports, food and more in Washington D.C.
