Walewale re-run: Sorting was disrupted because Kabiru was winning – Tia
Mr Francis Tia, the Assistant Secretary for the Walewale Constituency of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the North East Region, has stated the tension and disputes that marked the re-run of the primary on Monday, September 9, 2024, came about because Dr Tia Mahama Kabiru was ahead of his main competitor, Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Walewale, in the sorting of ballots.
Speaking on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM with host Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on Tuesday, September 10, Mr Tia explained during the sorting of ballots, some supporters of the sitting MP, led by Akamara Bawah, the former Constituency Chairman for Yagaba-Kubore, recognised Dr Kabiru's impending victory and decided to halt the process prematurely.
“The MP’s supporters saw defeat staring them in the face,” Mr Tia remarked.
He further alleged Dr Kabiru’s opponents were worried about his potential win in the constituency, noting, “Dr Kabiru's victory was evident way back on January 27, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.”
Mr Tia expressed confidence the matter had been referred to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP for a final resolution.
He highlighted among the 17 constituency officers, 15 supported Dr Kabiru, making his victory inevitable.
"This is a gentleman who is doing well for his people, and they want to reward him by electing him as their leader," Mr Tia stated, suggesting some party members, including Chairman Samaba, the Northern Regional Chairman of the party, are unhappy with the outcome.
He asserted the people's will cannot be overturned by violence, emphasising, “We have won.”
He also announced plans for a 'thank you' tour to express gratitude to all delegates for their support and efforts during the primary.
