A/R: GWCL workers in suspend strike over demolition of staff residences
The Ashanti Regional branch of the Workers’ Union of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has suspended its strike, which was sparked by the unlawful demolition of residences belonging to Chief Managers in the region.
The three-day industrial action caused significant disruption to water supply, leaving customers in the region struggling with shortages due to the suspension of operations.
The workers accused the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council of orchestrating the takeover and demolition of five company-owned bungalows at Danyame, which were reportedly handed over to private developers.
Following interventions from GWCL’s directors and appeals from key stakeholders, the workers agreed to suspend the strike after a series of discussions aimed at resolving their grievances.
Addressing a press conference, Emmanuel Okpoti Kodiah, Regional Vice Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, urged the company’s management to deliver on their promise to address the issue.
“We have temporarily called off the strike based on assurances from management, but we will not hesitate to resume if these concerns are not resolved,” he cautioned.
The suspension of the strike has allowed water supply to resume, providing much-needed relief to affected customers across the region.
