Tensions rise in NDC over Evalue Ajomoro Gwira MCE appointment
There is growing discontent within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the nomination process for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position in the Evalue Ajomoro Gwira Constituency of the Western Region, with some party members strongly opposing certain candidates.
The aggrieved party members argue that individuals who allegedly sabotaged the re-election bid of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Kofi Arkoe Nokoe, in the 2024 elections should not be considered for the MCE role.
They believe such an appointment would undermine the MP's work and aggravate existing divisions within the party.
A major point of contention is the potential candidacy of Madam Augustina Tebuah Kwofie, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate and wife of the Evalue Ajomoro Gwira Constituency chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Annor-Kwofie.
Party insiders accuse the couple of orchestrating a ‘skirt and blouse’ voting agenda, which allegedly encouraged voters to support John Mahama for President but back Catherine Ablema Afeku, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, over Kofi Arkoe Nokoe in the parliamentary race.
Sources within the Constituency claim that after losing the NDC parliamentary primaries, Mr. Annor-Kwofie and his wife deliberately worked against the party’s MP.
Their alleged tactics included:
Inciting hooligans to disrupt party events and insult key figures, including Western Regional Chairman Nana Toku. Coordinating voter suppression in NDC strongholds such as Gwira Banso, where the NDC reportedly lost at all eight polling stations. Rejecting donations from the NDC MP during a family bereavement while openly accepting gifts from the NPP candidate, Catherine Ablema Afeku. Many party faithful, including Mame Ama Ntefo, a fishmonger and staunch NDC supporter, and Uncle Charles Kwofie, have condemned the couple’s actions.
They argue that individuals who betrayed the party should not be rewarded with leadership positions.
“We will not support any candidate who worked against our MP just to further their own ambitions,” Uncle Charles stated.
A petition submitted to the Western Regional NDC leadership by former Constituency Secretary, Mr. John Abugri, has further outlined detailed allegations against Madam Augustina Tebuah Kwofie, her husband, and their allies, calling for their exclusion from the MCE vetting process.
Amid the tensions, party grassroots are rallying behind Herbert Kuah Dickson as the preferred candidate for the MCE position. They describe him as a loyal and hardworking party member whose leadership would complement the work of Kofi Arkoe Nokoe and ensure unity and progress within the Constituency.
“This is the first time in history that an Evalue Ajomoro Gwira MP has won back-to-back.
We must not allow internal sabotage to derail our momentum,” stated Ben Asmah, a party cadre.
The grassroots are urging the national and regional executives to prioritize loyalty and party unity in their selection process and ensure the MCE nomination supports the NDC’s long-term growth in the Constituency.
